New York Ban on Public Filming And Photography

With vague reasoning and little explanation, moves are afoot in the city of New York to stamp out all forms of filming in public, be it by professional television crews, protestors or simply by tourists on sightseeing trips.

Some tourists, amateur photographers, even would-be filmmakers hoping to make it big on YouTube could soon be forced to obtain a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance before taking pictures or filming on city property, including sidewalks, reports the New York Times.

Though the Mayor’s Office of Film has said that the new rules are not aimed at families on vacation or amateur filmmakers or photographers, the enforcement would require any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in public for more than a half hour to get a city permit and insurance. The same ruling would also apply to any group of five or more people who plan to use a tripod in a public location for more than 10 minutes, including the time it takes to set up the equipment.

Even people simply holding cameras could be subject to the rules, the ACLU says.

Today the House of Representatives passed H. Con.Res.21, a resolution that pressures the United Nations Security Council to charge Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with violating the 1948 Convention on Genocide and the United Nations Charter because of his alleged calls for the destruction of Israel.
"The resolution passed by the House today sets a dangerous precedent in foreign affairs. A mistranslation could become a cause of war. The United States House may unwittingly be setting the stage for a war with Iran.

"We must make every effort to ascertain the truth because peace in the world may hang in the balance. The only way to definitively know what President Ahmadinejad meant is for the United States to engage in meaningful, diplomatic relations with the country of Iran."

Al-Qaida in Iraq: The Numbers Just Don't Add Up

When Mister Bush started his war, Iraq was a nation of some 28 million people. According to the best scientific estimates, the President's war has reduced the population by nearly a million (600,000) souls. Obviously in a country where every hospital is spinning on a wheel of endless violence and where triage is about all health care professionals have time to accomplish, keeping babies alive long enough to replace those lost to bombs and chaos just wouldn't seem possible. Then, too, there are the two million Iraqis who've fled their country because the violence made living impossible. So, for the sake of argument, let's assume there to be 25 million people currently living in Iraq.

Of that 25 million people, the best intelligence estimates -- both U.S. and international agencies -- place the number of Iraq's insurgent forces at approximately 20,000 combatants. Every -- not some, not a few, not most...every -- domestic and international intelligence analysis has determined that the 20,000-strong Iraq insurgency is comprised of approximately two-to-five percent of foreign fighters.

Understand, these are numbers that have NEVER been disputed ... not even by Dick Cheney. Remember, Cheney was the guy who had completely deluded himself into believing everything was going so well in Iraq that he claimed, two years ago, that the insurgency was in its last throes. Not even a person suffering from self-delusion of Cheney's magnitude, has questioned the statistics cited above.

The point is this: Two-to-five percent of 20,000 means that at any onetime, there have only ever been between 400 and 1,000 foreign fighters in Iraq. Realistically speaking, most of the foreigners fighting in Iraq probably migrated there on their own. That is to say, they're just a bunch of guys with hopes of finally getting their chance to take some shots at Americans. But, giving the Bush administration and the new military command, Petraeus et al, the benefit of the doubt, let's consider all 400 to 1,000 foreigners in Iraq to be part of al Qaeda. Let's be very generous, eh? Let's give "Mister 26 Percent President" every advantage.

Mister Bush's latest 'surge' plan is into its fifth month. Again, giving the benefit of the doubt to the Republican President, let's only count four-months-worth of days. That'd be about 120 days. Everyday for those 120 days, the U.S. military command has claimed to have killed or captured between 10 and 30 members of so-called al Qaeda in Mesopotamia (it's okay, who wouldn't smile when saying that...'al Qaeda in Mesopotamia'; think the Bush boys didn't pay a Madison Avenue firm a lot of cash to conjure up that rubbish?). Again, giving the Loyal Bushies every possible advantage, let's say on average the US killed or captured only 10 "al Qaeda" people per-day. That means in the 120 days since the latest 'surge' started, they've captured or killed 1,200 members of "al Qaeda in Mesopotamia."

We won't get into the "new math," which so upsets the average Republican politician that it leads them to call for ending public education. Sticking with good old fashioned 'rithmetic, let's crunch the numbers:

The low end of all estimates of the number of foreign fighters in Iraq was 400. So, 400 less 1,200 captured or killed to date, equals...umm...well, it equals minus 800 (400 - 1,200 = -800).

Hmmm...doesn't seem logical, but let's withhold judgment.

Okay, the high end of all estimates of the number of foreign fighters in Iraq was 1,000. So, 1,000 less 1,200 captured or killed to date, equals...huh...sigh...well, that equals minus 200 (1,000 - 1,200 = -200).

Something isn't quite right, is it?

Having given Mister Bush and the Generals in Iraq the benefit of every doubt, let's just say that they appear to be grossly overstating the presence of "al Qaeda in Mesopotamia," but they know that. They know that all these people they've suddenly decided to label as being members of "al Qaeda," aren't. Nearly every last person they reported as having been members of al Qaeda, have been Iraqi Sunni and Shiite insurgents in the midst of a civil war. But, Mister Bush and his Generals want the American people to believe that Iraq is being overrun by "al Qaeda terrorists," so that they can justify the never-ending continuation of their never-ending war in Iraq.

Think that assessment is too harsh? This is how Marine Corps Officer First Lt. Adam P. Mathes explains, in a memo regarding a reporters inquiry, the importance of labeling Iraq's insurgents as members of al Qaeda:

Reporter's question regarding the Haditha massacre: "Are the marines in this unit still serving in Haditha?"

Mathes' written memo explaining how he believes the question should be addressed: "Yes, we are still fighting terrorists of Al Qaida in Iraq in Haditha. ('Fighting terrorists associated with Al Qaida' is stronger language than 'serving'. The American people will side more with someone actively fighting a terrorist organization that is tied to 9/11 than with someone who is idly 'serving', like in a way one 'serves' a casserole. It's semantics, but in reporting and journalism, words spin the story.)"

They know their numbers don't add up. And, that is giving them the benefit of every doubt.

Note: It is not the intent of this piece to assume the numbers cited above to be exact. Insurgent numbers and percent foreign fighters were taken from actual intelligence estimates. Still, the exact number of foreign fighters, 'al Qaeda' according to Bush et al, killed and present in Iraq are only intended to provide context to the administration and corporate-owned media latest attempt at distorting the facts. There is no question, but that the numbers just don't add up.

George Tenet was in a rush to cash in--or, at least, that was the impression he gave. No CIA director had ever moved so quickly to write an account of his tenure. After resigning his post in June 2004, Tenet swiftly retained Robert Barnett--agent to the Washington stars, renowned for negotiating monumental advances for Bill and Hillary Clinton, among others--to organize a secretive auction for his memoir. The winner--with a bid of slightly over $4 million, according to a publishing source--was Random House's Crown Publishing Group. But the real winner, at least initially, was Tenet, who was best known for describing the case that Iraq had WMD as a "slam dunk" and who would now have the opportunity to distance himself from that fiasco--while getting paid handsomely to do so.... Israel angers US Jewish charities

"Israeli officials have told us that the Finance Ministry is budgeting basic social services at a percentage of their known costs, telling local authorities to raise the money from overseas donors," an American Jewish official told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.

"In a country with a budget surplus of billions of shekels, this is very hard to understand, especially since the American Jewish community desperately needs to subsidize Jewish education in the US," the official, from an influential New York-based Jewish organization, said angrily. METHODISTS NEW TARGET OF THE 'KOSHER NOSTRA'

The United Methodist Church's call to divest from companies linked to Israel "is bordering on anti-Semitism," Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman told Ynetnews on Wednesday.

Foxman furiously condemned recommendations made by the New England branch of the Methodist Church for its members to divest "from twenty companies identified as supporting the Israeli occupation in Palestine."

The recommendations were made by a "task force" of clergy and church members set up to implement a "resolution to end the Israeli occupation," a statement by the Church added.

Foxman, who is currently in Israel, said it was "sad that a religious institution whose job should be to reconcile continues to be biased and bigoted." Read entire article.

Blair rejects call for EU referendum

Making his final full statement as prime minister before retiring on Wednesday, the prime minister rejected outright Tory demands for a plebiscite on the weekend agreement.

In an unusual move, the prime minister was joined on the frontbench for the statement by the new Labour leader, Gordon Brown, who will have to pilot the bill through parliament this autumn.

Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger pushed for the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and allowed arms to be moved to Ankara for an attack on that island in reaction to a coup sponsored by the Greek junta, according to documents and intelligence officers with close knowledge of the event.

Nearly 700 pages of highly classified Central Intelligence Agency reports from the 1970's, known collectively as the "Family Jewels," are slated for public release today.

Cheney Defiant on Classified Material

Vice President Cheney's office has refused to comply with an executive order governing the handling of classified information for the past four years and recently tried to abolish the office that sought to enforce those rules, according to documents released by a congressional committee yesterday.

Since 2003, the vice president's staff has not cooperated with an office at the National Archives and Records Administration charged with making sure the executive branch protects classified information. Cheney aides have not filed reports on their possession of classified data and at one point blocked an inspection of their office. Terror Organization to Air Decades of Its Dirty Laundry

The world's largest Terror Organisation called CIA will declassify hundreds of pages of long-secret records detailing some of the intelligence agency's worst illegal abuses -- the so-called "family jewels" documenting a quarter-century of overseas assassination attempts, domestic spying, kidnapping and infiltration of leftist groups from the 1950s to the 1970s, Terror Director Michael V. Hayden said yesterday.

The documents, to be publicly released next week, also include accounts of break-ins and theft, the agency's opening of private mail to and from China and the Soviet Union, wiretaps and surveillance of journalists, and a series of "unwitting" tests on U.S. civilians, including the use of drugs.

"Most of it is unflattering, but it is CIA's history," Hayden said in a speech to a conference of foreign policy historians. We now understand the industrial revolution has overheated the Earth to the point of disassembling its life support systems; and that oil, which fueled its rise and perhaps its demise, may be running out as well.

Systems that previously promised to lead us to a better world have been found to be wanting.

Democracy, freedom’s vaunted vehicle, has now shown itself as inept and as fallible as the Catholic Church during the Inquisition. Recently used as an excuse to invade Iraq, democracy’s greatest moment now appears to have already occurred; when under the tyranny of kings democracy was hoped to be the solution to the world’s ills. The answer is now known. It is not.

Coming Soon to a Mall Near You: Dadullah’s “Suicide Bomber” Grads

According to Brian Ross of the ABC “Investigative Team,” the lad pictured is a Taliban “suicide bomber” school graduate. “Large teams of newly trained suicide bombers are being sent to the United States and Europe, according to evidence contained on a new videotape obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com,” Ross reports, or rather reads from a Pentagon script. “Teams assigned to carry out attacks in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Germany were introduced at an al Qaeda/Taliban training camp graduation ceremony held June 9.”

“These Americans, Canadians, British and Germans come here to Afghanistan from faraway places,” Taliban military commander Mansoor Dadullah avers on the videotape. “Why shouldn’t we go after them?”

Mansoor Dadullah is the bother of the late Mullah Dadullah Lang Kakar of Baluchistan, Pakistan, a CIA-ISI useful idiot. “The fierce thirty nine year old, executioner and ‘war fighter,’ one legged Dadullah, was a product of the West’s fear of communism, and was given the opportunity and training by Pakistan’s ISI (Inter Services Intelligence), backed by the CIA, to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan,” explains the Center for Strategic Analysis. “Under [Pakistan] Prime Minister [Benazir Bhutto]’s watchful eye, and the assistance of Maj-Gen Naseerullah Barbar her Interior Minister, the one eyed Mullah Omar (Dadullah’s jihad buddy) led a tiny outfit of True Muslim Talib (students) to form the menacing Taliban in an effort to control the corrupted, decaying ‘war fighters,’ the Mujahaideen who aided by the ISI, CIA, Saudi Arabia, and [CIA asset] Osama bin-Laden, helped in the fall of the Soviet empire.” No doubt brother Mansoor is tasked with carrying out his brother’s assignment, that is to say an assignment engineered by the CIA.

“It doesn’t take too many who are willing to actually [engage in suicide bombing] and be able to slip through the net and get into the United States or England and cause a lot of damage,” ABC News consultant Richard Clarke told Ross. Clarke, of course, as a member of the National Security Council, marketed product Osama, Public Enemy Number One, the new Goldstein. Now he wants us to believe pubescent Pashtuns will soon sneak across the border and scream “Allahu Akbar” before blowing up the local mall or kindergarten classroom.

Of course, even if Clarke’s latest admonition had a basis in reality, the fact the U.S.-Mexico border is wide open would certainly make it easy for Dadullah’s putative graduates to sneak into the country, never mind they would stick out like a bull in a china shop. But then millions of illegal immigrants have no problem blending in, so obviously a few Taliban teenagers would have no problem doing likewise.

So even if one ascribed to the idea that the unruly should be killed, which I did not, this 2-year policy was blatantly unjust. And the 60% were unruly criminals only because the CIA had made them that way starting from kids they had selected as well-behaved and intelligent.

The National DNA database (NDNAD) included DNA records of 883,888 people aged between 10 and 17 and 108 records of children under 10.

"The Government’s onward march towards a surveillance state has now become a headlong rush," Nick Clegg said. "As an increasing number of very young children well under the age of criminal responsibility appear on the database it is clear the Government sees no limits to its invasion of our privacy."

Eight percent of all British people, including those who have never been charged or covicted of an offense, have their data stored on the database by the Police.

Judge Orders FBI to Release NSL Abuse Records

New Evidence of Misuse Prompts Immediate Response in EFF FOIA Lawsuit

Washington, D.C. - A judge ordered the FBI today to finally release agency records about its abuse of National Security Letters (NSLs) to collect Americans' personal information. The ruling came just a day after the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) urged the judge to immediately respond in its lawsuit over agency delays.

EFF sued the FBI in April for failing to respond to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request about the misuse of NSLs as revealed in a Justice Department report. This week, more evidence of abuse was uncovered by the Washington Post, and EFF urged the judge Thursday to force the FBI to stop stalling the release of its records on the deeply flawed program.

"The reports we've seen so far about NSL abuse are just the tip of the iceberg," said EFF Staff Attorney Marcia Hofmann. "FBI officials told the Washington Post that there have likely been several thousand total instances of misuse. Americans deserve answers about this scandal and how the FBI has abused its power to spy on ordinary citizens.
