Obama, Holder as bad as Yoo?

There was a time when the United States was the undisputed world leader when it came to upholding the rule of law. We lost that reputation under George W. Bush. And now, even under President Obama, we are being outclassed and outshone by other nations.

This morning, the Washington Post reported that the British government has launched a criminal investigation to determine whether British intelligence officers were involved in the torture of a British resident detained by the United States.

Notably, the British Attorney General initiated the investigation and called on the police to investigate "as expeditiously as possible given the seriousness and sensitivity of the issues involved." British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, "I have always made clear that when serious allegations are made they have got to be investigated."

While the British are seeking to restore international respect for their nation by adhering to the rule of law, President Obama is "looking forward" and Attorney General Eric Holder is twiddling his thumbs. Twelve days ago, the world read leaked details from an International Committee of the Red Cross report concluding that the treatment to which detainees were subjected while under the control of the CIA "constituted torture." Was this enough to spur Holder to act? Shockingly, no.

Is this what we have become? Are we, as a nation, going to do nothing about the fact that our leaders authorized and employed torture? If President Obama and Attorney General Holder refuse to launch a criminal investigation, then they are accessories after the fact in the torture themselves. They are no better or worse than individuals like John Yoo, who bent the law to allow the torture in the first place.

Can we please get upset about this? At the very least, please take a minute to send an E-mail to the Department of Justice, asking AG Holder why he is covering up torture. Just use the following link to get started:

US F-22 fighter jet crashes in California
A US military F-22 aircraft, the world's most advanced fighter jet, crashed in the southern California desert Wednesday, an Air Force spokesman said.

"An Air Force F-22 crashed at about 10:00 am (1700 GMT) approximately 35 miles northeast of Edwards air force base, California," US Air Force Richard Johnson said.

The jet left from Edwards Air Force base on a test mission, he said, adding "One pilot was on board. His condition is unknown."

The Treasury has handed out $25 billion to each and every big bank, so just two of these banks alone got as much as the reported one-quarter of all homeowners in America suffering from Negative Equity on their homes and in need of mortgage renegotiation. Yet today’s economic shrinkage cannot be reversed without a recovery in consumer demand. The economy has lost the ‘virtual wealth’ in higher-priced homes and the stock market, and must rely on after-tax earnings. But I see little concern for wage earners in the Treasury plan. Without debt relief, consumer spending and business investment will not recover.”

Obama, world crisis and the new world order

The depth of the current economic crisis is leading many people to favour a form of governance that would place economic and political life under the trusteeship of international organisations.

Barack Obama’s new cabinet, which is made up of those responsible for the crisis, will ensure the ascendancy of financial interests. In the meantime no one is calling for the people to have power in the monetary sphere. The result is that democracy is being killed by financial power.

A new world order has been in the making for quite some time and is now becoming “inevitable”. Many a politician and economist are quick to say that great sacrifices are called for, and that any “reasonable” person will see that suffering and hardship are “necessary.”
The crisis that is currently affecting our lives is behind this global shift. The slow fire has moved from real estate, to banking and finances, and is now reaching industry, agriculture and the whole economy. From the heartland in the United States it is reverberating outward touching the entire world.

The fear of a domino effect and its potential for economic, political and social upheavals and the fear of widespread anarchy will provide the necessary tools to install this new order, which for most people will appear as the only possible outcome. The act of governing will change as a world body will be in charge the financial, economic and tax systems. Police, prisons and private relations inside and outside the family will come under its purview, so will national sovereignty of the peoples and the right to express opinions that are different from those of the single thought of relativism, which will be seen as the only solution that is available and desirable.

A year ago, the Iraq war was a sure bet to dominate the 2008 presidential campaign.

Gen. David Petraeus, admitting frustration at the war’s slow progress, predicted that the size of the U.S. force in Iraq would remain largely unchanged for the foreseeable future. Obama, Clinton pledge to defend Israel against Iran

The Democratic White House hopefuls vowed Wednesday to defend Israel against any Iranian attack but differed on how to engage the Islamic republic over its nuclear ambitions.

At a televised debate ahead of next Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama agreed that a nuclear-armed Iran was unacceptable.

Both called for diplomacy but Obama went further in renewing a promise of "direct talks" at a leaders' level with Tehran, along with other US foes.

Iran should be presented with "carrots and sticks," the Illinois senator said, while stressing "they should also know that I will take no options off the table when it comes to preventing them from using nuclear weapons or obtaining nuclear weapons."

"We cannot permit Iran to become a nuclear weapons power," Clinton said, ruling out any summit talks and condemning President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for raising doubts about who really carried out the September 11 attacks of 2001. Full article
