US accuses Pakistan of illegally modifying weapons for use against India
The allegation that Harpoon anti-ship missiles sold to Pakistan under the Reagan administration as a defensive weapon were modified to strike targets on land caused uproar in New Delhi.
But they were denied by Pakistan, where the accusations were seen as a naked attempt by Washington to put pressure on Islamabad over its co-operation in anti-terror efforts against the Talban and al-Qaeda.
The charge was made at an awkward time for Islamabad as legislation that would provide Pakistan with $7.5 billion (£5 billion) in non-military US aid is currently stuck in the US Congress, which has longstanding concerns about Pakistan's development of nuclear and conventional military capability. Washington believes that Pakistan is still not doing enough to combat Taliban extremists on its soil, remaining fixated on the Indian threat instead. More
