The USGS said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.7, was 20.6 miles (33 km) deep and was centered 160 miles (260 km) north of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch for the region.Indonesia issued a tsunami warning today after a powerful earthquake struck off the western coast of Sumatra island.
The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 and had the "potential to cause a tsunami", Indonesia's geophysics agency said in a statement.
The earthquake was centred in the Indian Ocean around 96 miles from the coastal town of Bengkulu.
Residents in Bengkulu said they felt the quake strongly, but it did not appear to have caused major damage in the region, which was also hit by a strong quake late yesterday.
The geophysics agency issued a tsunami bulletin following the quake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also warned that coastal communities around Bengkulu may be at risk of large waves.
Indonesia does not have equipment to measure changes in sea level that would indicate a tsunami was on its way.
Agencies routinely issue warnings after shallow offshore quakes with a magnitude of 6.5 or above. Sources
