Despite the fact that many Americans distrust the National Security Agency for its role in the Bush Administration's warrantless wiretapping program, the agency should be entrusted with securing the nation's telecommunications networks and other cyber infrastructures, President Obama's director of national intelligence told Congress on Wednesday.

Director of National Intelligence Admiral Dennis Blair told the House intelligence committee (.pdf) that the NSA, rather than the Department of Homeland Security which currently oversees cybersecurity, has the smarts and the skills to secure cyberspace.

"The National Security Agency has the greatest repository of cyber talent," Blair said. "[T]here are some wizards out there at Fort Meade who can do stuff."

Blair added that "because of the offensive mission that they have, they’re the ones who know best about what’s coming back at us and it’s defenses against those sorts of things that we need to be able to build into wider and wider circles."

He acknowledged that the agency had a trust handicap to overcome due to its role in the Bush Administration's secret domestic spying program, and therefore asked Congress to help convince the public that it's the right agency for the task. More

Japanese politician: Too many U.S. troops in Japan

Next Prime Minister of Japan wants U.S. troops to get out of country. Ichiro Ozawa says 47,000 U.S. troops not needed and can go home. That will set the stage for a battle between pro-U.S. military presence Obama and Ozawa.

The rising star of Japanese politics, the opposition Democratic Party of Japan leader Ichiro Ozawa, says he sees no need for most of the U.S. troops in the country.

Ozawa, talking with reporters last week, said Japan could get along with just the U.S. 7th Fleet. The rest of the 47,000 U.S. military personnel could go home, he said, according to Japanese press accounts.

"If Japan is prepared to take care on its own issues that are relevant to itself, then there is no need for the United States to forward deploy to such an extent in Japan," Ozawa is quoted on his party’s Web site. "The Americans’ role should become smaller if Japan has a decent strategy for dealing with global issues and shares greater burdens at least on matters associated with our country."

Ozawa is expected to be Japan’s next prime minister as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party continues its slide in voter confidence. Recent polls showed Prime Minister Taro Aso has less than a 14 percent favorable rating.

The LDP was quick to respond, calling Ozawa’s remarks inappropriate at a time he is pushing for new elections.

"The Japanese government thinks that to limit [U.S. troops] to just to the 7th Fleet is unrealistic," Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura told reporters Thursday.

Ozawa has called for Japan to be more independent of the United States in regional security issues. In 2006, the two sides agreed to realign U.S. troops in the country. According to the agreement, the biggest change would be on Okinawa, which now hosts a bit less than half the troops and 75 percent of the bases solely used for the U.S. military in Japan. More

Airlines race to prevent European flight ban

El Al, Arkia, and Israir face European flight ban. Israeli flights to U.S. would be banned over European air space due to poor safety and security records.

Could Israeli airlines soon be barred from flying to Europe and the United States? Channel 2 reported Thursday night that the European Aviation Safety Agency has sent the Israel Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) a warning via e-mail that if its flight safety did not improve, the European agency would blacklist El Al, Arkia and Israir.

This would prohibit them from landing at European airports, and perhaps even from flying over the continent. Flights to the US could also be cut as a result of such a decision. The European agency is set to take a decision on the issue in a month's time, according to the TV report.

Industry sources said the European warning was triggered by the US Federal Aviation Administration's downgrading of Israel's air-safety system to a third-world "category two" level last December. The FAA cited "severe security shortcomings in Israel's Civil Aviation Authority" and a range of security defects at Ben Gurion International Airport.

Giora Rom, the head of the ICAA, played down the European e-mail. "We are in close contact with the Europeans," Rom said. "I don't know what the fuss is about. The Europeans' e-mail is strange. We are doing everything we can to improve security."

An airline source, speaking on behalf of El Al, Arkia and Israir, said, "The airlines are safe, and if the ICAA takes action, everything will be alright."
Aviation experts had warned that the FAA's lowering of Israel's security ranking would adversely affect the image of Israel-based airlines in the US and Europe, as well as their profitability. More

Russian warships have returned to the naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus, used by the Soviet Union since the late sixties, after more than a decade of absence.

U.S.: No normal Syria ties until it stops backing Hamas, Hezbollah

In August 2008, Syrian president Bashar Assad, during his visit to Russia, pointed out that his country is open for talks with Russia about reactivating the use of the naval base in Tartus.

It was in 1967 that the Soviet Navy started using this Syrian port as one of its main Mediterranean stations.

Back in Soviet times about nine Russian warships used to be on constant service in the port of Tartus.

“We really helped Syria to build up its naval fleet. But it is also necessary to maintain it. Very often Syrian commanders would come to one of my ships asking to share some spare parts or oil and so on,” remembers Admiral Valeriy Selivanov – commander of the 5th Soviet Mediterranean Navy Squadron, the man who was in charge of this naval force – in regards to how warm relations were back then.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia withdrew its ships from the region, but the relations never faded. During the past few years the Russian ships of the Black Sea Fleet have started visiting Syria again. At the beginning of this year, for the first time in 13 years, the fleet dropped anchor in Tartus.

Many see it as a sign that Russia could be seeking to revive its naval influence in the region. Link

The sharp downward spiral of oil prices has prompted economists to predict that Tehran is facing severe financial hardship within the space of a few months.

Iran's presidential contenders have to address the budget deficit brought about by the plummeting oil prices and the world banking crisis.

The country's economy is almost totally dependent on oil, which accounts for 80% of the country's foreign exchange receipts, while oil and gas make up 70% of government revenue.

Cash rolled in when the price of oil was above $140 a barrel and the country amassed huge foreign currency reserves, but with the price falling to around $40, that revenue has dried up accordingly.

For the first time since the Islamic revolution in 1979, Iranians will turn away from geopolitics and focus instead on the state of their economy when they go to the polls in June.

The US president Barack Obama and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy are believed to be among the record 205 nominations received for the 2009 Nobel peace prize.

Jewish groups reject Holocaust-doubting bishop's apology

Bishop Richard Williamson, whose readmission to the Catholic church caused an international outcry, last night apologised for remarks in which he denied the scale of the Nazi Holocaust.

In a statement on the website of the Rome Catholic news agency Zenit, he said his views on the Holocaust were not those of an historian. They had been "formed 20 years ago on the basis of evidence then available, and rarely expressed in public since." Williamson added: "To all souls that took honest scandal from what I said, before God I apologise."

He caused outrage by saying in a TV interview broadcast in January that there were no gas chambers in the Nazis' ­concentration camps. He also ­challenged the widely accepted figure of six million victims, saying he believed that no more than 300,000 Jews had died.

"I can truthfully say I regret ­having made such remarks, and that if I had known beforehand the full harm and hurt to which they would give rise, especially to the Church, but also to survivors and relatives of victims of injustice under the Third Reich, I would not have made them," Williamson said.

Some Jewish groups expressed disappointment at his statement. Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, said it was "not the kind of an apology that would end this matter" because it failed to address the central issue. More

At last Britain admits rendition of terror suspects

Gordon Brown was under growing pressure to hold an independent inquiry into Britain’s complicity in torture last night after ministers admitted that terror suspects detained by British soldiers in Iraq were secretly flown by the US to Afghanistan.

John Hutton, the Defence Secretary, told MPs that despite repeated official assurances to the contrary, British soldiers were involved in at least one case of rendition. Two suspects captured and detained by British Special Forces outside Baghdad in 2004 were subsequently removed by the US to Afghanistan where they remain in detention. There was “no evidence” that the two, believed to be Pakistani members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a proscribed organisation with links to al-Qaeda, had been tortured, Mr Hutton insisted.

But the Government’s embarrassment was heightened when Mr Hutton revealed that officials told Jack Straw and Charles Clarke about the case in April 2006 in internal briefing papers. Mr Straw repeatedly denied that Britain was involved in rendition while he was Foreign Secretary. Yesterday Mr Hutton sought to defend his colleagues, saying that officials had made only “brief references” to the case in “lengthy papers” which did not “highlight its significance”. However, he added: “It is clear to me that the transfer to Afghanistan of these two individuals should have been questioned at the time.”

A spokesman for Mr Straw said: “If he had been alerted to the significance of the case at the time it’s a fair suggestion that he would have brought it to the attention of Parliament.” More

Canadian jets scrambled to intercept Russian bomber before Obama visit

Canadian fighter jets scrambled to intercept a Russian plane approaching Canadian airspace shortly before U.S. President Barack Obama visited Ottawa, the defence minister said Friday.

Peter MacKay said he wasn’t accusing Russia of deliberately timing the flight to coincide with the visit — when Canadian security was focused in Ottawa — but he did call it a “strong coincidence.”

“It was a strong coincidence which we met with … CF-18 fighter planes and world-class pilots that know their business,” said MacKay. More

Russia slams as farce Canada's statement on Tu-160 flight
A Russian government source expressed astonishment on Friday over a statement made by Canada's defense minister over a flight by a Russian strategic bomber near the Canadian border.

Peter Mackay said two Canadian fighters forced the Russian Tu-160 Blackjack to make a U-turn on February 18 as it neared Canadian airspace less then 24 hours before U.S. President Barack Obama was due to visit Ottawa. The Canadian minister said the move was "a strong coincidence."

"The Canadian defense minister's statements concerning the flights of our long-haul aircraft are totally unclear... This was a routine flight. The countries adjacent to the flight path had been notified and the planes did not violate the airspace of other countries. In this light the statements by the Canadian Defense Ministry provoke astonishment and can only be called a farce," the source said.

The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky, confirmed that all the neighboring states had received prior notification of the flights by Russian strategic aircraft.

Lt. Col. Vladimir Drik, a Russian Air Force spokesman, said earlier the Tu-160 flights were in compliance with international agreements and rules and did not violate Canadian airspace. RIA Novosti

U.S. Ready to Respond to N.Korea Missile

In an exclusive interview with ABC News’ Martha Raddatz, Adm. Timothy Keating, head of the U.S. Pacific Commands, said that the military is prepared to shoot down any North Korean ballistic missile — if President Obama should give the order.

“If a missile leaves the launch pad we’ll be prepared to respond upon direction of the president,” Keating told ABC News. “I’m not a betting man but I’d go like 60/40, 70/30 that it will, they will attempt to launch a satellite. There’s equipment moving up there that would indicate the preliminary stages of preparation for a launch. So I’d say it’s more than less likely.”

“Should it look like it’s not a satellite launch — that it’s something other than a satellite launch — we’ll be ready to respond.”

Intelligence reports suggest that North Korea is preparing a long-range missile test. Earlier this week, North Korea announced its plans to send a satellite into orbit as part of its space program. More

Chavez losing hope in Obama

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez believes that high hopes should not be placed on the new U.S. administration or on President Barack Obama, national media said on Friday.

The comments came after the U.S. State Department published on Wednesday its annual human rights report in which it criticized Venezuela for its "arbitrary arrests and detentions; a corrupt, inefficient, and politicized judicial system characterized by trial delays...attacks on the independent media; widespread corruption at all levels of government; violence against women."

Venezuela dismissed the U.S. claims and the country's foreign ministry demanded that the U.S. stop the practice as it spoiled relations between other countries.

"High hopes should not be placed on the new U.S. government," Chavez said on national television. "It (U.S.) has remained an empire and the empire is oppressing the people, irresponsibly blaming us for infringements of human rights."

China, who came under fire, also condemned the report, saying that the U.S. was meddling in the internal affairs of the country.

Chavez has repeatedly said that he is ready for dialogue with Obama's administration if relations between the two countries are based on respect. Relations between the U.S. and Venezuela worsened in September 2008 when Caracas expelled the U.S. ambassador for allegedly organizing a conspiracy against the country. More

Bush should have executed Gitmo detainees, says former CIA

A former CIA officer has said its ridiculous that the Bush administration didn't execute numerous prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, regardless of whether they have had a trial, when it had the chance.

"Many of those individuals that are there are enemy combatants and that's based on the Geneva Conventions and should be executed," said Gary Berntsen, who spent 20 years with the CIA, to Fox's Gretchen Carlson on the show, Fox & Friends. "It's ridiculous that the Bush administration, after seven years, didn't deal with many of those that we know are enemy combatants." More

Court Favors Attorney’s Right to Classified Info

A federal court this week said that litigants have a First Amendment right to provide classified information to their attorneys when doing so is necessary to protect their interests. The ruling is implicitly at odds with a common government practice of denying attorneys access to classified information in Freedom of Information Act cases, pre-publication review disputes, and other matters.

There is a “First Amendment right to share [classified] information with an attorney when such sharing is necessary for an attorney to advise his client of his rights,” wrote Judge Gladys Kessler (pdf) of the DC District Court.

The ruling came in a lawsuit brought by former Defense Intelligence Agency employee Anthony Shaffer against the DIA in connection with the controversial intelligence program known as Able Danger. DIA sought to bar Shaffer from providing classified information about the program to his attorney, Mark S. Zaid, even though he holds a security clearance. Mr. Zaid challenged the denial, and the court found merit in his complaint.

“Without knowing all that his client, and the Defendants, know, Plaintiff Shaffer’s counsel cannot be prepared to adequately represent his client’s interests,” Judge Kessler concluded.

Executive branch agencies have frequently barred attorneys from access to classified information in civil litigation, effectively driving a wedge between the litigant and his counsel, particularly in disputes involving prepublication review of manuscripts that are said to contain classified information. “I have faced this issue numerous times,” Mr. Zaid said. U.S. to boycott Durban 2 conference on Jewish racism

The United States will not attend a United Nations conference on racism that critics say will be a forum to criticize Israel, and will no longer participate in planning sessions for it, the State Department announced on Friday.

The conference is a follow-up to the contentious 2001 conference in the South African city of Durban which was dominated by clashes over the Middle East and the legacy of slavery. The U.S. and Israel walked out midway through that eight-day meeting over a draft resolution that singled out Israel for criticism and likened Zionism - the movement to establish and maintain a Jewish state - to racism.

Israel and Canada have already announced that they will boycott the upcoming World Conference Against Racism in Geneva from April 20-25, known as Durban 2, but President Barack Obama's administration decided to assess the negotiations before making a decision on U.S. participation.

The decision to drop U.S. involvement comes one day before U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton leaves on her first trip to the Middle East in her new capacity, including stops in Israel. More

"Before announcing his plan for withdrawing troops from Iraq, President Obama made an intriguing courtesy call on Friday morning: to former president George W. Bush, who began the war that Obama has so vehemently opposed," Kornblut writes.

Kornblut adds, "White House officials did not elaborate on the call, which Obama placed from a holding room at Camp Lejeune just moments before he gave his long-awaited speech. Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said Obama made the call 'as a courtesy' to the former president."

Israel launches campaign against UN nuke watchdog chief

Israel's Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) recently intensified its attacks on the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei. The AEC, one of the most classified bodies in Israel that is also, among other things, responsible for operating the Dimona nuclear reactor, does not often issue public statements, and usually plays down its activities.

But in recent months, given the IAEA director's actions relating to all aspects of Syria and Iran's nuclear programs, the committee decided, with the consent of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, to stop tiptoeing around the issue. The AEC now hurries to respond to ElBaradei's interviews, in which he often speaks of Israeli in critical tones.

The latest expression of this new policy is a letter to be published this week in the latest issue of the American weekly magazine, Newsweek, written by the AEC spokeswoman Nili Lifshitz. Lifshitz is leaving her post at the end of the week after years on the job to assume a different position in human resources at the Nuclear Research Center (NRC, the Nahal Sorek nuclear reactor, which the AEC also oversees). FBI Raids Univ. of Florida Nuclear Power Institute

Yes you guessed it: Director of institute is Iranian-born.

A nuclear space power institute at the University of Florida has been raided by the FBI.

Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Rhew in Tallahassee says search warrants were served at the university's Innovative Nuclear Space Power and Propulsion Institute.

Rhew would not comment on the target of the investigation, but University of Florida spokesman Steve Orlando says the FBI was in the office of professor Samim Anghaie, the Iranian-born director of the institute.

Rhew would not comment on the investigation but did say no arrest warrants have been issued.

Orlando says the university is cooperating with the investigation and Anghaie's employment status is being reviewed. Source

Brown signs declaration against anti-Semitism

Britain’s prime minister became the first world leader to sign the London Declaration on combating anti-Semitism.

The measure was adopted last week in the British capital by 125 legislators from more than 40 countries at a coalition meeting to combat anti-Semitism.

On signing the declaration, Gordon Brown said, “So many of the principles it enshrines are already things we are doing here in Britain, and while I’m proud of the bold action Britain has taken to combat anti-Semitism such as improved reporting, prosecutions for anti-Semitic Internet hate and the funding of Holocaust education in schools, there is no room for complacency.

He noted that the Department for Communities and Local Government is organizing an event at Beth Shalom, the Holocaust Center, to look in detail at how the government can implement the declaration.

"I encourage other heads of government to become signatories to this historic agreement," Brown said. "Ttogether our renewed efforts can rid the world of this ancient virus."

The London Declaration called on legislators to “expose, challenge and isolate political actors who engage in hate against Jews and target the State of Israel as a Jewish collectivity.” It also calls on governments to “challenge any foreign leader, politician or public figure who denies, denigrates or trivializes the Holocaust and must encourage civil society to be vigilant to this phenomenon and to openly condemn it.” More

Former Estonian defense ministry official pleads guilty to spying for Russia

A former Estonian defence ministry official who sold Nato secrets to Russia has been sent to jail for 12 and a half years after a secret trial.

Herman Simm, a former head of security, pleaded guilty to treason on Wednesday.

The court where he was tried did not reveal which country he spied for, but investigators said Mr Simm passed nearly 3,000 documents to Russia.

They said he received 1.3m kroons (£73,000; $106,000) for the data. The Kremlin denied any involvement.

Nato made no comment, but the case, which is Estonia's biggest spy scandal since the Cold War, is seen as an embarrassment for the former Soviet state. Estonia joined Nato in 2004, angering Russia.

'Russian contacts'

Investigators said Mr Simm, who used to be Estonia's police chief, had been working for the Russian intelligence service (known as SVR) since 1995, when he joined the Estonian defence ministry.

He became head of security at the ministry in 2000, handling classified information regarding Nato's communications and surveillance systems. More

Protest against loss of civil liberties planned for cities around Britain.

Lawyers, judges, politicians, human rights supporters, anti-surveillance activists and members of the Countryside Alliance are gathering at several UK cities on Saturday to discuss their concerns about the alleged erosion of civil liberties.

The Convention on Modern Liberty is being held in London, Belfast, Bristol, Cardiff, Cambridge, Glasgow and Manchester.

They will hear from a roster of speakers that will include Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti, journalist Henry Porter, barrister Helena Kennedy and Tory MP David Davis. Protests planned in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

American journalist Jamie Malanowski, writing in The First Post, called for the UK to have its own Bill of Rights.

He added: "It's time to summon up the shades of such great British reformers as William Wilberforce and his fellow abolitionists. It's time to realise that Britain needs to make real something it already thinks is right."

Rahm Emanuel’s office, which is no more than a three-second walk from the Oval Office, is as neat as a Marine barracks. On his desk, the files and documents, including leatherbound folders from the National Security Council, are precisely arranged, each one parallel with the desk’s edge.

During a visit hours before Congress passed President Barack Obama’s stimulus package, on Friday, February 13th, I absently jostled one of Emanuel’s heavy wooden letter trays a few degrees off kilter. He glared at me disapprovingly. Next to his computer monitor is a smaller screen that looks like a handheld G.P.S. device and tells Emanuel where the President and senior White House officials are at all times. Over all, the office suggests the workspace of someone who, in a more psychologized realm than the West Wing of the White House and with a less exacting job than that of the President’s chief of staff, might be cited for “control issues.”

Because the atmosphere of crisis is now so thick at the White House, any moment of triumph has a fleeting half-life, but the impending passage of the seven-hundred-and-eighty-seven-billion-dollar stimulus bill provided, at least for an afternoon, a sense of satisfaction. As Emanuel spoke about the complications of the legislation, he was quick to credit colleagues for shepherding the bill to victory—Peter Orszag, the budget director; Phil Schiliro, the legislative-affairs director; Jason Furman, the deputy director of the National Economic Council––but, in fact, nearly everyone in official Washington acknowledges that, besides Obama himself, Emanuel had done the most to coax and bully the bill out of Congress and onto the President’s desk for signing. The Iran-Israel nuclear endgame is now much closer

In recent days, four key developments have clicked in to edge Iran and Israel much closer to a military denouement with profound consequences for American oil that the nation is not prepared to meet.

What has happened?

First, Iran has proven it can successfully launch a satellite into outer space as it did on February 2. Teheran claimed, to the incredulity of Western governments, that the satellite was to monitor earthquakes and enhance communications. Few believe that, especially since America's own space program continuously launches unpublished military satellite missions. Teheran plans three more satellites this year, creating an easily weaponized space net that worries American military planners.

Second, the International Atomic Energy Agency last week admitted that it had underestimated Iran's nuclear stockpile by about one-third. The watchdog group now confirms Iran possesses 2,227 lbs. of nuclear material, sufficient to create at least one nuclear bomb. That stockpile includes 1,010 kilograms of low-enriched uranium hexafluoride, or approximately 700 kilograms containing the vital uranium 235 isotope, the stuff needed to weaponize. More

US repeating old Iran lies at UN

Iran's UN envoy has criticized the new US ambassador, who accused Tehran of supporting terrorism and attempting to develop nuclear weapons.

In a speech to the UN Security Council during a session on Iraq, Susan Rice said once the US withdraws its troops from Iraq, it would 'seek an end to Iran's ambitions to acquire an illicit nuclear capacity, and its support for terrorism'.

Iran's UN envoy, Mohammad Khazaee, said Rice's remarks were a repetition of the same 'groundless accusations' against Iran that the previous US administration had made.

"It is unfortunate that, yet again, we are hearing the same tired, unwarranted and groundless allegations that used to be unjustifiably and futilely repeated by the previous US administration," Khazaee said in a letter to the council's president, Japanese Ambassador, Yukio Takasu.

"Instead of raising allegations against others, the United States had better take concrete and meaningful steps in correcting its past wrong policies and practices vis-à-vis other nations, including the Islamic Republic of Iran," Khazaee added.

Khazaee said that Iran's nuclear program 'has been, is, and will remain, absolutely peaceful and Iran has never tried nor will ever try to acquire nuclear weapons'.

Sir David Omand, Whitehall’s former and security and intelligence coordinator, called for unprecedented Big Brother powers to allow access to private details - including phone records, emails and travel information - to be given to the intelligence services.

Setting out a hugely controversial blueprint for the future of national security he said ‘moral rules’ about individual privacy would have to be broken.

His 17-page report calls for the creation of a vast state database to gather information about terrorist groups which are increasingly recruiting and operating online.

But he argued that a citizen’s right to privacy would have to be sacrificed to allow ‘intrusive’ intelligence techniques. More

CIA Adds Economy To Threat Updates

The daily White House intelligence report that catalogs the top security threats to the nation has a grim new addition, reflecting the realities of the age: a daily update on the global financial crisis and its cascading effects on the stability of countries through the world.

The first Economic Intelligence Briefing report was presented to the White House yesterday by the CIA, the agency’s new director, Leon Panetta, revealed at a news conference. The addition of economic news to the daily roundup of terrorist attacks and surveillance reports appears to reflect a growing belief among intelligence officials that the economic meltdown is now preeminent among security threats facing the United States.

“We’ve seen the impact of a worldwide recession occur throughout the world,” said Panetta, who described the agency’s newest product at his first news briefing since his confirmation. Prosecutor claims Iran/Contra whistleblower is a “danger” to society

Iran/Contra whistleblower Celerino “Cele” Castillo III was scheduled to report to prison on March 5, but the power of justice has intervened on his behalf.

A federal judge in San Antonio, at a hearing held late last week, ruled that Castillo’s report date to prison should be extended until July 20. The judge, W. Royal Furgeson Jr., issued his ruling over the objections of a federal prosecutor, who argued that Castillo should be sent to prison because he was a “danger to the community.”

The hearing was called by the judge to consider a motion to allow Castillo to remain free on bail through his appeal. The motion was filed by Castillo’s current attorney, public defender Judy Fulmer Madewell.

“One of the government’s arguments [made by the U.S. prosecutor, Mark T. Roomberg] as to why my client is a danger to the community is that he put an outrageous and erratic posting on his Web site,” Fulmer Madewell told the judge at the Feb. 19 hearing in federal court in San Antonio. “That story was actually written by someone else … so it was not an outrageous post by the defendant.”

UK sued over arms sales to Israel

The UK government is being sued over its policy of selling arms to Israel, which human rights activists say violates international law.

The Palestinian organization Al-Haq says under international law, London is obliged not to render "aid or assistance" to Israel following its recent invasion of the Gaza Strip, the BBC reported.

The group has urged the UK High Court to launch a probe into Britain's arms sales to Israel.

The recent war in Gaza killed more than 1,300 people including women and children. Israel is accused of employing controversial weapons, including white phosphorus ammunitions and depleted uranium, in the war.

The rights group said the UK government appears to have "positively assisted" Israel in its invasion of Gaza by continuing to sell it weapons.

"It is Al-Haq's position that if the UK were to meet its international obligations now, Palestinian lives and limbs in Gaza would be saved," said Phil Shiner, Al-Haq's lawyer in the case.

The war in Gaza, which has left thousands of Palestinians without shelter and in needs of vital necessities, has been condemned by international rights groups as well as governments around the globe.

"There would be a much greater chance of accountability for Israel's actions and a change in the policies of all key players so that nothing like it can ever again befall the Palestinian people," Shiner said. More

Pakistan faces new political crisis as Nawaz Sharif banned from office

Pakistan has been plunged back into political crisis after its Supreme Court banned its former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, from holding political office.

The court also ousted Mr Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League from power in Punjab province, where his brother Shahbaz was chief minister.

The ruling upheld a move by the country's election commission to ban the Sharif brothers from contesting elections because of past criminal convictions. But Mr Sharif accused President Asif Ali Zardari of orchestrating the ruling.

The ban on Shahbaz Sharif led to the immediate collapse of the state government in Punbjab. President Zardari immediately appointed Punjab's governor Salaman Taseer – a long-term opponent of the Sharif brothers - to run the provincial government as chief executive for the next two months pending the formation of a new administration.

Mr Zardari is also expected to try to persuade some of Nawaz Sharif's opposition assembly members to desert him and join a new coalition led by the ruling Pakistan People's Party.

Shares in Islamabad plunged five per cent amid fears of a return to the political instability of the 1990s when Mr Nawaz's PML party and the PPP of Mr Zardari's assassinated wife Benazir Bhutto persecuted each other and their supporters.

Those fears were heightened by a series of large protests in Lahore and other cities in Punjab, and also by calls by Mr Sharif for mass demonstrations to unite the opposition towards the ban. More

Iran says there will be no slowdown in its nuclear plan and urges US to 'face reality'

Iran yesterday denied having slowed down its nuclear activities and said it planned to install 50,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium over the next five years after staging a dummy run of its Bushehr reactor, built with Russian help.

Gholamreza Aghazadeh, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, dismissed claims by the UN nuclear agency that Iran had slowed the expansion of its controversial uranium enrichment plant at Natanz.

"America should face reality and accept living with a nuclear Iran," Aghazadeh said, adding that a new nuclear achievement would be announced in April. There are currently 6000 centrifuges operating at Natanz, up from 5000 last November.

Aghazadeh was speaking at Bushehr, on Iran's Gulf coast, site of the country's first nuclear power plant. Iran said it had carried out successful tests that had taken it a step closer to its launch.

"Our plan to install and run centrifuges is not based on political conditions," Aghazadeh told reporters. "We have a plan and we will go ahead with it."

Uranium enriched to a low level is used as fuel in a reactor; further enrichment makes it suitable for nuclear weapons.

The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency reported last week that Iran had managed to enrich a metric tonne of low enriched uranium, which is technically enough to build a weapon – though there remained many practical obstacles to the production of a bomb. The IAEA said Iran appeared to have slowed the rate at which its enrichment capacity was expanding. More

A grassroots movement called American Tea Party sprung up shortly after ARRA was signed into law. Its aim is to protest not only the stimulus package, but also "giant government programs that reach deep into their pockets.

These programs create huge economic burdens on American families and threaten their livelihood now and into the future." The group was spurred into action to create a Tea Party -- in homage to the famous Boston Tea Party in 1773, in which American colonists in Boston protested unfair taxation by their British government without any representation -- after CNBC pundit Rick Santelli and Republican wonk Michelle Malkin called for a "Chicago Tea Party" to be held on February 27th. The new rallying cry? "Taxation Without Deliberation."

Using social media such as blogs, Twitter and Facebook, the call for Tea Parties nationwide -- not just in Chicago -- spread like wildfire. As a result, Houston is one of the many cities that will be holding a Tea Party on February 27th. The protest is scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in front of the amphitheatre at Discovery Green. Tea Parties will be conducted simultaneously in many other cities nationwide, including Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Seattle, Cleveland and St. Louis.

Police are investigating after the body of a man was discovered in the sea off Southsea seafront.

The body of 44-year-old Paul Vigay was discovered in the sea at Eastney on Friday morning. Police said Mr Vigay, of Manners Road, Southsea, had been reported missing at 11pm on Thursday night. The body was discovered by a member of the public who was out on the beach walking their dog.

Police were called at 8.10am yesterday to the seafront next to the Royal Marines Museum, in Eastney where the body was found 10 metres from the shoreline. Police cordoned off the area. Police say Mr Vigay’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: ‘We were called by a member of the public after they saw the body in the water. ‘The police, with the help of the coastguard, brought him in.’ She added: ‘Investigations are under way.’ The Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and an inshore lifeboat were on the scene assisting the police.

Local residents said they were shocked to hear about what happened in
an area that is usually very quiet. Another resident added: ‘I have no idea what has happened. I heard a police siren and I looked out the window and saw the police cars. It was a bit of a surprise - and it’s not a nice surprise. I know the police interviewed a couple of dog walkers.’

Undertakers were called to take the body away and a post mortem examination will be carried out to try to establish the circumstances which
led to Mr Vigay’s death.
