WTO: cholera infects 16,000 people in northern Iraq
Between Aug. 23 and Sept. 10, at least 6,000 people had been reported with diarrhoeal diseases in Sulaymaniyah province, almost 7,000 in Kirkuk province, and at least 3,000 cases in Erbil province, WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told reporters in Geneva.
The good news is that, although the disease has spread, the number of deaths has remained the same, Chaib said, adding that measures taken to deal with the outbreak are having an effect.
Chaib said the WHO's representative for Iraq, who is normally based in Amman, Jordan, had made a number of trips to the north of Iraq, as well as to Baghdad to talk to the authorities and coordinate with them on this issue. More..
